On returning to school after the long summer holidays, the previous school year will for many students seem a thing of the dim and distant past, and exams may be the last thing on their minds. That, after all, is what summers are for!
Before the introduction of the revised national curriculum in 2000, pupils could return from their summer holidays and gently ease themselves back into the new school year during the first term, but sadly things are a little different now. Some pupils entering the sixth form (Year 12) in September may sit some of their AS exams as early as January. Those that are spared until the summer exams will face an average of 12 papers at the end of the first year, and nine at the end of the second. The importance of the AS levels is that the results are declared on the UCAS form when pupils apply to. The pressure on GCSE students can be equally strong,
Our Summer School takes place towards the end of the summer holidays and is designed to help students quickly get back up to speed for the new school year. Depending on the students' individual needs, some of the course may involve a brief review of last year's work, but the main emphasis will usually be on looking forward to the forthcoming school year, and giving the students a thorough overview of the material that awaits them there.
Attending the summer school gives students a sense of being 'ahead of the game' which can provide a great boost to their confidence and motivation as they enter the new school year. The days of cramming for a few weeks at the end of a 2-year course are a thing of the past, and students able to apply themselves from the first term will reap the rewards. By sacrificing a small part of their long summer holidays, students can return to school primed, full of confidence, and able to meet this challenge.
